Abbott Family, Mountbellew.

Connections to the Evans family - landlords in Ballinrooaun.

Jimmy Laffey

The Abbott family lived at the Malthouse, in Treanrevagh townland, adjoining Mountbellew town, in the late 1700s and first half of the 19th century. The attached article contains some brief information on that family and their numerous connections to other families, through marriage, including the Evans family of Cross House, Mount Evans and Ballinrooaun, the Cannon families of Millmount and Castlegrove and the Casement family of County Antrim – ancestors of Irish patriot Sir Roger Casement who was executed in 1916.

This is but a preliminary document and a large amount of information from the extended Abbott connections, who emigrated to the United States and Canada, is already available and currently being collated and when complete will be uploaded to this site. Accordingly appropriate references and citations will be included in later releases.

We acknowledge the generous support we received from Patrick Melvin, author of Estates and Landed Society of County Galway, Mary Burke, Tuam Herald researcher and columnist, and Herbert Parker, Churchgrove, our local authority on the Evans and Cannon families. We invite readers to contribute to this research to further enhance our knowledge of the extended Abbott family.
