Mary Lohan-Delaney.

Miss Mary G. Lohan, B.A., T.C.D was only the 26th female in Ireland to have graduated as a solicitor following the Sex Disqualification (Removal) Act being enacted and commenced her apprenticeship at the offices of Messrs. Henry Concannon & Co., Tuam, prior to embarking on her own practice in Menlough Oughter. She graduated from Trinity College, Dublin, and on May 2nd, 1934, she was entered on the handwritten Roll of Solicitors.

Mary, the youngest of four children born to John Lohan and Annie Kyne, of whom three survived into adulthood, was born on July 31st, 1899. Following her graduation she married Dr. J. Delaney of St. Brigid’s Hospital, Ballinasloe, at St. Michael’s Church, Dun Laoghaire, on July 18th, 1935 at a ceremony performed by Fr. P. Nicholson, P.P. Menlough. Mrs. Lohan-Delaney passed away in 1981.

A truly extraordinary women who dared to break the exclusively male populated legal mould in our fledgling State.
