My first encounter with this, no fire in sight!

The Electric Kettle

The Electric Kettle.

The first time I saw an electric kettle I was dumbfounded. I was about to turn five and was brought to Menlough for the first time on the carrier of the bicycle by my late mother. On the way back my mother decided to visit a woman that we knew as Maggie Dolly, a Mrs. Jordan in Derrylissane from whom we used to buy day old chicks. There was a family friendship here that went back to probably when my grandfather was the postman in the area. We were welcomed and in due course the tea was made but it was not like at home where the kettle was hanging over the fire to boil. This woman just picked up the kettle, walked over and put it on the table and it began to boil! Truly magic in my eyes!

That was the second of two strange things I saw on the one day with the first being seeing money sent along on a wire in a large local shop in Menlough, Lohan & Co..
