Larkin’s Forge

On the 2nd May 2024 I had the pleasure of meeting a man by the name of Seán Larkin. Seán’s family were blacksmiths for several generations back and even have connections with the Irish Rebellion of 1798 which led to one family member being arrested for making pikes and sentenced to life in “Van Diemen’s Land”.

Seán’s family forge is still there in it’s original setting and although sadly not in use to day you can still feel the history of the building the minute you walk inside.

Seán kindly allowed me to photograph him, the forge and a few items left at the forge. Thankfully a ledger dated 1913 from the forge has been saved by Seán and he kindly allowed for the book to be scanned. He also gave a lovely interview which can be played on the link below.

I wish to thank Seán for his time and contribution to the blacksmith heritage of County Galway.
