Leitrim Women Through Time

Emma Laffey was asked to speak for the Leitrim Women Through Time with Scéal Heritage who are a running a multi phased community project created and run by the North Leitrim Women’s Centre. Their project seeks to celebrate and record the lives of the ordinary rural women often neglected in history. On 16th September 2023 Emma gave a talk on her project An Bhean Ghluine – Midwife. This Galway Heritage Award project is about the role of the community midwife during early twentieth century. Craftworker Steffi Otto was there too from Heritage Crafts Alive giving demonstration on how to use the traditional Singer Sewing Machine.

  • Hello Emma. This is such an amazing project, a treasure trove of memories about the important work of midwives in the past. Thank you so much for sharing their stories and for highlighting the huge contribution these women made to their communities.
I was very excited to come across your project, as I share your passion for childbirth history (I’m a retired UK midwife). I’m currently exploring the life of a handywoman/midwife who practised in Swansea in South Wales in the late 1800s and early 1900s. I’d love to chat more! And also to have a copy of the booklet if possible. Thanks so much. Billie

  • Dear Emma,
Thank you so much for your offer to sent the booklet. Peggy Ryan and I have a project almost ready on our own district nurse for your project.
Listening to the many stories, common themes emerge which are in our story.
This is a great project. These women could easily be forgotten and disappeared from history. Thanks Emma for your attention and enthusiasm. It is contagious!
    Thanking you,
    Regards,
    Rosemary Hannan

  • Dear Emma,
Thank you so much . Peggy Ryan and I have a project on our local district nurse for your project.. Will have it ready soon for submission. Having listened to some of your stories, common themes emerge including our own.
Emma, this is such a great creative project, otherwise these women would just fade away and be forgotten about by the next generation.
    Thanks a million, Regards,
    Rosemary Hannan
