Midwife Elizabeth "Myra" Sherry
Elizabeth Myra Sherry is known to her family and friends as Myra. Myra’s training to be a nurse began in 1973 at Sir Patrick Dun’s in Dublin, Myra continued her studies and went to Holles Street and trained to be a midwife. Later on a neighbour asked her would she be interested in working as a midwife for our national army. Initially thinking it was a month’s work turned out to be a unique lifetimes work as a midwife for twenty nine years in the Army Nursing Service. Myra’s mother was a PHN and her Grandmother Elizabeth Hiney was a midwife and also featured here on our website.
Myra had an extraordinary unique job as she worked as a midwife for the Army Nursing Service or ANS for short at Irish Defence Forces, The Curragh County Kildare. The ANS celebrates 100 years of service in this year. There is no book for the 100 year celebrations but there is a 90th celebration book and our Irish Defence Forces have kindly given me permission to have it on our website you can see this book in a link below.
Myra who is now retired worked for 29 years with the ANS caring for the mothers and babies within our army service. She was stationed at The Curragh and delivered many babies over her career. Myra gives a fascinating interview into what it was like to be an Army Midwife and what was expected from her for this role. Myra gets emotional during her interview as she misses her work and especially the safe delivery of her little miracles. There is no midwifery within the army service anymore and I thank Myra personally for giving this brilliant and unique interview as a midwife for our ANS.
