Down Survey of Ireland.
Research and access guide for the 17th Century survey.
Jimmy Laffey
The 17th century ‘Down Survey’ resulted in the first systematic mapping of Ireland, with unprecedented levels of organisation and accuracy. It proved a milestone in Irish and world cartography and its maps
were used as a record of land tenure almost until the advent of the Irish Ordnance Survey in the 1820s.
This guide was compiled and edited by Jimmy Laffey, Skehana & District Heritage Group, for the Athenry Medieval Festival “Down Survey of Ireland” workshop held in Athenry Community Centre on August 20th, 2017.
