Over the centuries many variations of its name have been used with the earliest possibly being ‘An Giolcagh’ and following on with Gileagh, Gilkagh, Gillkagh and even Kilkough and Kilkeagh with the most common current forms being Guilka or Guilkagh though the official recognised name remains as Gilkagh as defined in statute in 1832.
